Winter in Cortez Colorado. This 24/7 follows one of the new volunteers, Taz, who arrived early and jumps on a call, a residential fire. This one is down the same road windy and dangerous road we have traveled before. After nearly thirty minutes running code, we arrive on scene, lite smoke showing, the Chief was first to arrive on-scene. Afternoon, training with their brand-new HURST eDralic tools.
Station 3, Engine 3 "A" Shift with Captain Palmer. Travelers are Firefighters without a Station for a home. They cover firefighters at stations in a Battalion. Today, we are with Firefighter David Ramirez as he works in the kitchen on some chow, medical calls and a structure fire.
This day is with the crew from Eng. 1 and Assistant Chief Bulke as they respond to controlled burns by property owners that go out of control. First up, the water tender arrives on-scene at a ranch no hydrants. Just as they put that one out, a call comes in for a wildland fire along the river about thirty miles out of town and unhappy property owners.
In this webisode, we are with two engine companes at the same time from Station 3 and Station 9, at the end of the nigt, the responde to the same commercial fire.
Morning, Engine 3, "A" Shift with Palmer.and an Explorer Scout On-Board. Covering Traveler catchs a fire, he has great luck catching calls lately. There last call, famous Rapper stuck in an elevator with crew. Later, people are everywhere partying. A call comes in, it's a Gang Shooting at the fast food gas station, people are everywhere.
This day starts with one of the Trainees, who is in his Senior year of high school, as he arrives at school. Back at the station, over at headquarters, Assistant Chief Bulke talks about the area they cover and how they are going to the citizens for a tax levy to get permanent firefighters. Cortez is a small town with a very small budget and the Chief knows how to stretch the dollars and get funding. A call comes in. It's a fire...
This 24/7 starts with roll-call at Station 17, this roll-call includes Deputy Chief Whiting, now the Assistant Chief. The Columbus Fire Department maintains the hydrants so seasonally, twice a year, they all must be tested, maintained or reported for service. Next, a tour of the Rescue rig with one of the technicians, he shows us the tools they use. Next, we ride on Engine 17 to a vehicle fire, it's blazing, then, a man down on a bike, then they catch another call, busy station.
We started filming with the San Francisco Fire Department in 2003. It was our fight against prime-time television that drove us to the Internet. In 2007 we launched our series thinking it would only be one or two videos. In those days, you could put short videos on AOL, Google and Yahoo...then came this. This is the very first Battalion Series webisode. In those days we were only able to film until 11:00PM. It starts with the crews checking the rigs and the medical supplies, and an EMS call comes in. The engine company responds.
Station 17, night, a call comes in, it's a Structure Fire. The Rescue and Engine 17 arrive on-scene of a home fully involved.. It turns out it was being remodeled. Rescue Firefighter Shell shows us around the interior. Night comes to a close as the sun comes up. Our first call in the morning is an extrication then some free body work.
The 2nd half of this 48 with Eng. 3's "A" Shift. Firefighter Silva is on a strict diet and a full regiment of exercises; he takes advantage of whatever time he has in between the large volume of calls at Station 3. A call comes in for an additional engine needed at a fire out in the west side of town. There's no hydrants out here. They are called off and head back to the station. On the way, they drive through one of Fresno's many homeless camps. They have overtaken the Downtown Fresno Area and it has become a very dangerous place full of drugs, prostitution and people that prey on others. A call comes in and they are out the door...and so much more.
